The Hutchinson Area Chapter of The Compassionate Friends, an organization offering grief support after the death of a child, will host its 11th Annual Remembrance Candle Lighting on Sunday, December 9th, at the Dobratz-Hantge Funeral Chapel (899 Highway 15 S) in Hutchinson, beginning at 7:00 PM. The event is open to anyone who would like to come and light a candle in remembrance of a child who has died too soon, whether it be your own child, or that of a neighbor, co-worker, relative or friend. The Santa’s Helpers program in Sibley County will have its 2012 Gift Distribution on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, December 11th, 12th and 13th at American Lutheran Church (911 8th Street) in Gaylord. Each child will be presented with a gift valued at $20.00, a pair of mittens and a hat. Each family is also provided with a new blanket or quilt. The Hutchinson area REACH Program will host a Holiday Celebration Outreach Supper on Thursday, December 20th, from 6:00 – 7:00 PM at Peace Lutheran Church (400 Franklin Street SW) in Hutchinson. The supper is for individuals and/or families in the area in need this holiday season. The meal is free, but they do ask that if you’re planning to attend that you pick up a free tickets at Peace Lutheran Church or Common Cup Ministry so they know to prepare for how many.

NAMI Meeker/McLeod Counties and the Foundation for Challenged Children (FFCC) invite you to Lunch with Santa on Saturday, December 22nd, from 11:00 AM – 2:00 PM at the McLeod County Fairgrounds (780 Century Avenue SW) in Hutchinson. You can enjoy a lunch of a hot dog, cookie, chips and a beverage. Bring your camera and have your picture taken with Santa. The event will also feature music by “Chopper – The World’s Nuttiest DJ,” games, prizes, treat bags, a limbo contest, a dance contest, a small flea market and more. The cost is a $4.00 donation plus a donation for the McLeod Emergency Food Shelf. The event is co-sponsored by Econofoods.

−January 3 “Happy Feet, Happy Heart” 5K Run/Walk Registration Underway1:00 pm – 2:00 pm
Registration is underway for the Buffalo Lake Healthcare Center’s “Happy Feet, Happy Heart” 5K Run/Walk and Half-Mile Kids Run on Saturday, February 23rd. The cost for the 5K Run/Walk is $15.00 if you pre-register or $20.00 the day of the race. There is no cost for children to participate in the Half-Mile Kids Run. Runners will receive a t-shirt for participating. Proceeds will benefit BLHC’s Friends and Relatives Enabling the Elderly (F.R.E.E.) Organization. A benefit dinner and dance is planned for Don Artmann (owner of Big Don’s Carthedral of Lester Prairie) on Saturday, January 12th, at Neaton’s Shed (3480 County Road 21), located across from the Hollywood Sports Complex, rural Watertown. Don was diagnosed with leukemia in July of 2011. All proceeds from the event will help with Don and his family with medical and housing expenses. The benefit will start at 4:00 PM and continue until midnight, including a great meal, silent auction and a dance with live music by Diamondback.

−January 16 Route 55 Jazz Band Free Concert8:00 pm – 9:00 pm
The Route 55 Jazz Band, along with guest jazz trumpet soloist Bob Baca, will perform a free concert on Wednesday, January 16th, at the Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted High School (8700 County Road 6 SW) beginning at 8:00 PM. Bob Baca is a trumpet virtuoso who has performed with the Minnesota Orchestra and the Milwaukee Symphony, and has toured with Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Mel Torme and Buddy Rich. He’s also a past member of the ensemble for Garrison Keillor’s “A Prairie Home Companion.” Again, the concert is free.
